On May 20th, 2024, I handed my youngest child three small notebooks on his 18th birthday, continuing a tradition I started with my spouse, Courtney, in 2017 for Christmas and his siblings in 2022 and 2023 for their respective 18th birthdays. For an entire year, I dedicated myself to writing daily entries, each one a reflection on the person receiving the notebooks. I chronicled the things I loved, appreciated, admired, or noticed about them, never missing a day.

Initially, I believed these notebooks would serve as a tangible reminder of my love and appreciation for my spouse and children, highlighting their unique qualities and the depth of my affection. A few months into the very first notebook (for Courtney), I soon realized that I, too, was a recipient of this gift. The act of daily reflection became something I cherished, forcing me to focus on the emotions and bonds of our relationships, rather than getting lost in the fleeting moments of everyday life.

Unexpected Lessons: Deepening Appreciation and Strengthening Bonds

Through this process, I discovered several unexpected lessons. First and foremost, the daily practice of reflection deepened my appreciation for the people in my life. Even on challenging days, taking the time to write something positive transformed my perspective, allowing me to see beyond temporary frustrations and recognize the enduring qualities that make my loved ones remarkable.

Moreover, this practice strengthened my relationships. By consistently acknowledging and celebrating the positive aspects of each person, I nurtured a sense of gratitude and connection. This not only enhanced my own well-being but also fostered a more supportive and loving environment for my family.

A Personal Journey of Growth and Transformation

As I documented my thoughts and feelings, I inadvertently embarked on a personal journey of growth. The notebooks became a record of my own development, revealing my values, priorities, and the depth of my love for my family. It was an introspective experience that paralleled the celebration of those around me.

For my children, the notebooks served as a record of their growth from adolescence to adulthood. As parents who have witnessed this transformation know, the period between 17 and 18 is a pivotal time, often marked by the first real decision a young person must make: what happens after high school? The notebooks captured this significant transition, preserving the memories and emotions of this transformative year.

Embracing a Tradition of Gratitude and Connection

I wholeheartedly encourage others to consider starting a similar tradition. The daily act of writing something positive about a loved one can have profound effects on both the writer and the recipient. It is a simple yet powerful way to cultivate gratitude, strengthen bonds, and create a lasting record of love and appreciation.

Whether it’s for a spouse, child, friend, or even oneself, this practice can bring a deeper sense of connection and understanding. It serves as a reminder to focus on the good, especially during challenging times, and to celebrate the unique qualities that make each of us and, thus, our relationships special.

In a world that often feels fast-paced and demanding, taking a few moments each day to reflect and write can be a grounding and uplifting practice. It is a gift that keeps on giving, not only to those who receive the notebooks but also to those who create them. By embracing this tradition, we open ourselves up to a journey of love, personal growth, and the joy of cherishing the most important people in our lives.
